International Contest "Gebrüder-Graun-Prize" For the fifth time already, music students compete for the „Gebrüder-Graun-Prize“. This prize is announced every two years by the Sparkasse foundation „Zukunft Elbe-Elster-Land“ and is organised by the Culture Office of the Landkreis Elbe-Elster. The participants exclusively play pieces of the two brothers Johann Gottlieb and Carl Heinrich Graun who were born in Wahrenbrück, Brandenburg. Carl Heinrich Graun was well known as composer and musical director of the court orchestra of Frederick the Great. The contest is held at the Bürgerhaus in Bad Liebenwerda. It should foster the cultural heritage of the Graun brothers and also provide a platform for young classical musicians. The special atmosphere of the contest makes it easy for the participants to get to know each other and to share personal and artistic experiences. Out of all applications 20 soloists and ensembles are chosen and invited to the contest. The contest will be moderated by Christian Filips (programme manager and dramatic advisor of the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin). The musicians present their skills to the jury within a time frame of 15 to 20 minutes maximum. This year, the jury consists of Prof. Dr. Christoph Henzel (Würzburg), Hermann Max (Bremen), Wolfgang Katschner (Berlin), Martin Ripper (Berlin), Ludger Remy (Dresden), Thomas Hettwer and Siegfried Fritsche (both from Finsterwalde). They decide about the prizes in the amount of up to 2,500 € for the best two soloistic performances and in the amount of up to 5,000 € for the best two ensemble performances. The past four contests already gave proof of the excellent musical quality of the participating soloists and ensembles. The young musicians presented the diversity of Graun’s music in vocal and instrumental performances. Thus, they demonstrated that Carl Heinrich Graun was a distinguished opera composer and that Johann Gottlieb Graun was a virtuosic instrumental composer. Both, the contest and the final concert are open to the public. Before the international contest starts, there will be a regional competition of musical ensembles, choirs and soloists from the district of Elbe-Elster which is announced by the Culture Office Elbe-Elster. The regional contest will take place on the 21st of October at the Bürgerhaus Bad Liebenwerda. This event aims at the introduction of regional musicians to the musical heritage of the Graun brothers. The winners of the regional award will perform during the final concert of the international contest on the 5th of November, 2011. This year, the „Gebrüder Graun Prize“ will be more than a contest. The highlight will be the first public performance of “Te Deum” (German initial version of C.W. Ramler) and of “Concerto Grosso G major” by C.H. Graun, played by the Lautten Compagney and the Sing-Akademie zu Berlin. Ten years ago, the scores of the collection of the Sing-Akademie were rediscovered in Ukraine, as well as more than 500 additional musical works of the Graun family. The closing event of the Graun festival will be a musical church service at the baptistery of the Graun brothers in Wahrenbrück. Friday, 4th of November 02:00 p.m.
